James Taylor had an awesome start to his career — for a moment.\u00a0 In 1968, he was one of the first artists picked up by The Beatles\u2019 new label, Apple.\u00a0 Then, he recorded his first album using the studio time while The Beatles were not using Trident Studios during their sessions for The White Album<\/i>.\u00a0 His lyrics in \u201cSomething In The Way She Moves\u201d from that first album inspired George Harrison\u2019s \u201cSomething.\u201d\u00a0 But then the album was not promoted, and Taylor\u2019s drug rehab prevented promotional touring.<\/p>\n
So by 1970, Taylor basically had to start over.\u00a0 He and his producer Peter Asher left Apple for Warner Brothers and pulled together a mostly sweet and basic collection of tunes.\u00a0 The resulting Sweet Baby James<\/i> is one of the reasons why people like me like to listen to entire albums and not just the hits.\u00a0 Sure, there are gems like \u201cFire And Rain\u201d and \u201cCountry Road,\u201d which are radio favorites, but there are so many other solid tunes like “Sunny Skies” and \u201cBlossom\u201d that keep this album running.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
The album ranges from the spirituall-inclined with \u201cFire And Rain\u201d and \u201cLo And Behold\u201d to downright traditional with a beautiful version of Stephen Foster\u2019s \u201cOh Susanna,\u201d which is lovely with its simple vocals and single guitar.\u00a0 Taylor also shares a generous portion of his sense of humor as well.\u00a0 \u201cSteamroller\u201d and the lackluster “Oh Baby, Don’t You Loose Your Lip On Me” are both thinly veiled sarcastic jabs at white blues.\u00a0 “Suite for 20 G,” a disoriented mishmash of unfinished songs thrown together to create a final track, was named for the fact that delivering that final track guaranteed Taylor a $20,000 payday.<\/p>\n
