Back in the mid-1970s, there was always time for the summertime blues.<\/p>\n
Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, Roger Daltry, and Keith Moon arrived in Houston, Texas on November 20th<\/sup>, 1975, at the beginning of their Who By Numbers <\/i>tour. \u00a0<\/i>By the time they were finished that evening, they had created a document of the original Who at the height of their powers. That concert has now been officially released as a DVD.<\/p>\n The concert has been available up until now only as a poor quality bootleg. It was not intended for wide release as only two cameras were used and they are subject to the limitations of mid-1970s technology.\u00a0 The sound and picture have been remastered and while they may not be up to today\u2019s standards, it is good enough to hold your attention as it presents a rare glimpse of the original band at their best. <\/p>\n The concert started slow. \u201cSubstitute\u201d and \u201cI Can\u2019t Explain\u201d are good enough but \u201cSqueeze Box\u201d and especially \u201cBaba O\u2019Riley\u201d are the two weakest tracks among the 25. Things pick up with Entwistle\u2019s \u201cBoris The Spider, and from then on, the energy builds. <\/p>\n The center of the performance was eight songs from Tommy<\/i> including a medley. \u00a0I have always preferred The Who picking and choosing songs rather than playing the entire opera. Today the songs are immediately recognizable to most rock fans. Here, \u201cAmazing Journey,\u201d \u201cAcid Queen,\u201d \u201cPinball Wizard,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Free,\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cSee Me Feel Me\u201d are honed back to basics.\u00a0 Daltry is in fine voice and Townshend is at the top of his guitar form, but it is Keith Moon who drives the sound and makes one lament his premature death three years later. Many times Entwistle is \u00a0the odd man out. His bass lines are heard but the cameras did not always get him in the picture. <\/p>\n The last third of the concert finds them roaring through \u201cSummertime Blues,\u201d \u201cMy Generation,\u201d and \u201cMagic Bus.\u201d Throw in a blast from the past, \u201cRoadrunner,\u201d plus \u201cJoin Together\u201d and \u201cWon\u2019t Get Fooled Again,\u201d and you have one of the better live stretches of Who music that has been preserved. <\/p>\n Live performances from the original carnation of The Who are to be treasured.
