Stop The Clocks <\/i>turns out to be an apt title for the first Oasis compilation, as it pretty much halts the band\u2019s career at the 1996 mark, just after the release of the landmark masterpiece (What\u2019s The Story) Morning Glory?<\/i>. <\/p>\n
This was the band\u2019s heyday, commercially and musically, so it makes sense for a collection to focus on this peak\u2026except that a) this is two discs and b) Oasis had four albums and a B-sides\/rarities compilation between 1997 and 2006, the year of this release. Also, there are only 18 songs here, nine per disc, which is a bit skimpy and questionable in the CD era (each CD is about 40 minutes, or the length of an LP).<\/p>\n
If this sounds like nit picking, it is, because the music here is without question fantastic throughout. There is nary a bad song to be found. Definitely Maybe <\/i>and Morning Glory <\/i>are two of the best albums of the \u201890s, hands down, and the assorted singles and B-sides from the era are good enough to have been included on those records. Of the remaining tracks, \u201cGo Let It Out\u201d and \u201cSongbird\u201d are excellent and \u201cThe Importance Of Being Idle\u201d is one of the few highlights of the dull Don\u2019t Believe The Truth <\/i>disc. Only \u201cLyla\u201d fails to excite; it could have been replaced with \u201cThe Hindu Times,\u201d \u201cF\u2014ing In The Bushes\u201d or anything from Be Here Now, <\/i>which is unjustly ignored on this compilation. <\/p>\n
If you already own the two aforementioned albums, there\u2019s little here that you will need, and if you don\u2019t, you should pick them tout suite<\/i>. If you are an Oasis newbie, this is a fine introduction, although be warned it is not a comprehensive or balanced overview of the band\u2019s career (that honor belongs mostly to 2010\u2019s Time Flies<\/i>). <\/p>\n
Nearly all of the best songs from Morning Glory <\/i>are here, from the acoustic ballad \u201cWonderwall\u201d and the majestic \u201cImagine\u201d rewrite \u201cDon\u2019t Look Back In Anger\u201d to the classicist noise of \u201cSome Might Say\u201d and the epic one-two punch of the title track and \u201cChampagne Supernova.\u201d Only \u201cHello\u201d is missing, but the B-sides \u201cAcquiesce\u201d and \u201cThe Masterplan\u201d make up for it.<\/p>\n
From Definitely Maybe <\/i>we get the swagger of \u201cRock And Roll Star\u201d (as clear a mission statement as any band has ever written, lyrically and musically), the giddy sparkle of \u201cSupersonic,\u201d the mini-masterworks \u201cLive Forever\u201d and \u201cSlide Away,\u201d and the T-Rex update \u201cCigarettes & Alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n
All of these songs, as well as the B-sides and the three other songs mentioned above, are among the best of the decade and the best Oasis had to offer, and time has only cemented their status as classics, which is what the guys were aiming for. It\u2019s not a perfect collection or a balanced overview, but it\u2019s a solid collection of damn fine music.<\/p>\n
