Calling all Rod Stewart fans! A new two-disc CD titled Rarities <\/i>has just been released. It probably will not appeal to the average music fan who only wants to hear his hits but for the hardcore fan of his music, it is a musical nirvana as it fills in a lot of gaps in his catalogue of music. <\/p>\n
His career has just passed the half-century mark. By the early 1970s, he was a star with The Faces and as a solo artist. His breakthrough album was 1971\u2019s Every Picture Tells A Story, <\/i>which produced the huge hit \u201cMaggie May.\u201d\u00a0 That song appears in two very different versions. There is an early version with unfinished lyrics and a 1971 rendition from a BBC radio session, which presents the song as a polished classic. \u201cYou Wear It Well\u201d is another well-known song that appears as a work in progress.<\/p>\n
The Smiler <\/i>sessions from 1974 yielded a number of tracks. The sad and somewhat gloomy \u201cSo Tired\u201d and \u201cMissed You,\u201d plus a cover of Stealer\u2019s Wheel \u201cYou Put Something Better Inside Of Me\u201d did not make it onto the album. A very interesting track is \u201cThink I\u2019ll Pack My Bags,\u201d which became the Ron Wood written \u201cMystifies Me.\u201d Also of interest are alternate versions of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cGirl From The North Country\u201d and his twist on the Aretha Franklin\u2019s \u201c(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,\u201d which he changes to \u201cman\u201d in this version.<\/p>\n
A number of singles, with the Faces and without, are also included. \u201cOh No Not My Baby,\u201d \u201cJodie,\u201d \u201cWhat Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me),\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s All Over Now,\u201d and \u201cPinball Wizard\u201d are all good examples of his early career style and sound.<\/p>\n
Rarities <\/i>gathers a number of odd and unusual tracks into one release. As such, it falls into the category of a niche release.
