Tens-of-thousands of artists and bands have produced music during the last half-century and quickly disappeared.\u00a0A small percentage\u00a0actually recorded some music with little or no commercial success. Most of the music deserved to be forgotten, but every once in a while there was a gem that was lost to history \u2013 which brings us to Denny Lile.<\/p>\n
Lile was a singer\/songwriter\/guitarist who succumbed to the effects of alcoholism in 1995 at the age of 44. He spent most of his life playing in the Midwest, where he developed a large following playing in bands and solo. He was one of those artists who never quite made it to the big time and since his death has faded from memory.<\/p>\n
The Big Legal Mess label has\u00a0a reputation for\u00a0resurrecting the memories and music of forgotten artists. Now, Denny Lile joins their lineup with the re-release of his first LP and an accompanying documentary DVD.<\/p>\n
Lile put together a personal and mature album that belied his age. \u201cHear The Bang\u201d is a poignant track that looked toward the future. He travels a different musical road with the country rocker \u201cLooks Like The Feeling\u2019s Slowly Fading.\u201d<\/p>\n
He had a number of Midwest sensibilities that connected him to its land and culture. \u201cLove Is On\u00a0A Freight Train,\u201d \u201cMeet Me By The River,\u201d \u201cIf\u00a0You Stay On Solid Ground,\u201d and \u201cShe\u2019s More Than Just A Friend\u201d travel through\u00a0that culture of trains, waterways, love,\u00a0and clothes via Lile\u2019s wonderful lyrical imagery.\u00a0There are a few love songs added that provide a balance to the album. \u201cRag Muffin\u201d and perhaps the album\u2019s best track, the sonic \u201cOh Darlin’\u201d tap into his sensitive side.<\/p>\n
The documentary was assembled by his nephew Jer,\u00a0and includes interviews with friends, bandmates, business partners, his ex-wife, and daughter. There are numerous still photos interspersed throughout. It does a good job examining Lile\u2019s psyche and piecing together his life.<\/p>\n
Today, Denny Lile is a forgotten\u00a0footnote in music history.
