The Blind Boys Of Alabama was formed at Talladega Institute For The Blind in 1944. Their blend of gospel and blues made them stars on the gospel and rhythm & blues circuit during the 1940s and 1950s. During the 1960s, they gradually broke through into the mainstream and continue to record and tour up til the present day.<\/p>\n
Spirit Of The Century <\/em>was originally released in 2001. It has now been remastered and issued with seven live bonus tracks.<\/p>\n When they recorded the album, there were still three original members with the group. Jimmy Carter, George Scott, and Clarence Fountain were in their 57th year of membership with the Blind Boys. They usually toured with four singers and four backing musicians,but here it is an all-star team featuring guitarist David Lindley and John Hammond, as well as harpist Charlie Musselwhite\u00a0leading support.<\/p>\n The Blind Boys Of Alabama is basically a gospel group whose vocals tend to move toward the blues. They are an example of where the blues and gospel intersect.<\/p>\n Their repertoire is mostly traditional gospel songs and hymns, but there are some surprise additions along the way. \u201cNobody\u2019s Fault But Mine,\u201d \u201cGood Religion,\u201d and \u201cMotherless Child\u201d come to life through their intricate harmonies.\u00a0\u201cAmazing\u00a0Grace\u201d is taken in a very creative direction as the words are sung to the music of \u201cHouse Of The Rising Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n They also take some modern tunes and move them\u00a0in a\u00a0gospel direction. The Rolling Stones\u2019 \u201cI Just Wanna See His Face\u201d and Tom Waits\u2019 \u201cWay Down In The Hole\u201d and \u201cJust Wanna Be Here\u201d are not just covered but transformed.<\/p>\n The seven live tracks, all from the album, were recorded at the Bottom Line during 2001. Songs such as \u201cThe Last Time,\u201d \u201cMotherless Child,\u201d and \u201cNo More\u201d provide a nice counterpoint to their studio counter parts.<\/p>\n Spirit Of The Century <\/em>is gospel music for the new millennium.
