And we come full circle! My first review for The Daily Vault three years ago was an archived review of The Cranberries\u2019 comeback album, Roses<\/i>. Since then, members of the band have been arrested, lawsuits have been filed, and the band went on hiatus again. It\u2019s been so long since the band was on everyone\u2019s lips that some people don\u2019t even realize that they\u2019re still around. It\u2019s been five years since the last record and the band has returned with acoustic renderings of some of their biggest hits and a couple new songs. It\u2019s an interesting premise, but something that\u2019s been done to death at this point.<\/p>\n
\u201cLinger\u201d (obviously the band\u2019s longest lasting hit) was already acoustic, so this new version just feels weird and off-putting. The original version is still the one everyone\u2019s going to remember for future generations anyway. Of all the new songs, \u201cThe Glory\u201d sounds like classic Cranberries, circa \u201994. It\u2019s a great song, with a great feeling and amazing vocals; it\u2019s excellent to see them still doing originals, not just relying on the classics.<\/p>\n
\u201cDreams,\u201d never one of my favorites, still doesn\u2019t appeal to me at all. \u201cZombie,\u201d which is probably one of the most recognizable songs if you grew up in the \u201890s, takes on new dimensions here. Dolores O\u2019Riordan\u2019s vocals are impeccable and the song sounds as good as it does on modern rock radio.<\/p>\n
\u201cOde to My Family\u201d is one of those songs that sound better than the original. It\u2019s kind of like one of those singles you forgot about until you hear this version and you go, \u201cOh crap, I do remember this song now!\u201d I was also happy to see that one of my favorite songs \u201cAnimal Instinct\u201d from 1999\u2019s Bury The Hatchet<\/i> is here. I always enjoyed this track and this version just reaffirms that notion. It\u2019s just lovely from beginning to end.<\/p>\n
All in all, Something Else <\/i>is a very decent album. It\u2019s the perfect soundtrack for a romantic night in.
