Knower\u2019s fourth album Life <\/i>starts off with the introduction number \u201cKNOWER RULEZ,\u201d which has the words in the title repeated with celebratory pomp. It sets the perfect stage for what\u2019s to come \u2013 the sheer gall in this Los Angeles-based duo\u2019s music. <\/p>\n
You see, for the ones who don\u2019t know, both members of this duo (singer\/songwriter Genevieve Artadi and multi-instrumentalist Louis Cole) come from strict jazz backgrounds, both having graduated from Jazz Studies programs. The duo\u2019s music, however, is a concoction of jazz, funk, and most importantly, supersized beats. The result of this combination is an album with a sense of both crudeness and simplicity, which only comes from deep musical sophistication \u2013 not to mention lots of sass.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government Knows,\u201d a track about government surveillance, has the chorus \u201cthe government knows when you masturbate\u201d and has lyrics that are rapped in robotic monotone, which totally come across as crass. But the musical arrangement, which consists of beats that pound with rabid aggression and parts of the song that slow down from hyper dance to relaxing jazz, is far from crass. It is downright classy.<\/p>\n
\u201cBUTTS TITS MONEY,\u201d with its coarsely suggestive lyrics and cheesy synthesizers, has aspects that are jarring. But everything put together has a certain hutzpah that makes this cut very cool. The calming, ethereal jazzy twist towards the end of this rambunctious number takes you entirely by a most pleasant surprise. It\u2019s a good example of the duo\u2019s songcrafting savviness.<\/p>\n
On \u201cHanging On\u201d and \u201cOvertime\u201d the duo adds some serious \u201880s-style funk into the music. This, combined with the smooth jazz aspects and Artadi\u2019s speaking style of singing, lends an overall tacky \u201880s dance party vibe to both the tracks. But as a matter of fact, both these numbers are absolutely classy and are even album highlights, thanks to the killer bass lines and the brilliant big beats that give the dated musical aesthetics a refreshing new twist.<\/p>\n
The duo\u2019s interpretation of jazz and electronic music is creative, to say the least. Atradi and Cole aim pretty high, when it comes to the level of musical composition and production on Life<\/i>.
