Laurie Berkner is the undisputed queen of children’s music (according to People Magazine anyway, with whom I’m inclined to agree) and here she returns with 14 reworkings of her fan favorites, done EDM style. Yes, you read that right \u2013 kids’ music with electronica. That might appear unusual, but when you consider that enthusiasts of Berkner’s vary widely in age, with a large number of teenagers who have remained fans after childhood, it really only makes sense. <\/p>\n
Thankfully, since Berkner is a well-rounded songstress with two decades of experience, we get plenty of variations on EDM so, like a lot of other similar music, it’s not a monotonous stream of beats and synthesizer to ad nauseam. <\/p>\n
Sure, while they’re all dance songs at their core, we get the Latin flavored fun of \u201cI’m Gonna Catch You,\u201d where Berkner’s cocker spaniel Winston makes a cameo, and the fiddle acrobatics of Kira Willey on \u201cI Really Love To Dance.\u201d Animal enthusiasts will appreciate the ’80s synth of \u201cThe Cat Came Back\u201d(a tune penned by Harry S. Miller over a hundred years ago) which comes with cats meowing in the song and the finger snapping of \u201cBumblebee (Buzz Buzz),\u201d which champions our often overlooked little flying friends.<\/p>\n
Mostly, though, the album is packed with Berkner’s trusty classics like \u201cWe Are The Dinosaurs,\u201d maybe her most known song \u201cBOOTS,\u201d and other upbeat tunes like \u201cRocketship Run\u201d and \u201cDrive My Car,\u201d all of which are packed with the utmost fun and designed to get your body moving. <\/p>\n
While I’ve been a fan of everything Berkner has done, I have to admit I approached this a little apprehensively as it seemed, well, too gimmicky.
