Somewhere between the blues and the holiday season is Eric Clapton\u2019s\u00a024th studio album.<\/p>\n
Happy Xmas <\/em>is not your usual holiday season fare. Consisting of 13 Christmas tunes and one original composition, it is an album of music where Clapton brings his own\u00a0style of blues to the Christmas season. It all adds up to one of the more unique Christmas albums of the season.\u00a0It may not be\u00a0your album of choice\u00a0for sitting around the tree on Christmas Eve, but is fine for ear phones and your favorite beverage at the end of a long day.<\/p>\n It is both\u00a0a mellow blues\u00a0and Christmas album. Veterans Jim Keltner and bassist Nathan East set the foundation and Clapton builds on top of\u00a0each track\u00a0with stings, choirs,\u00a0backing vocals, guitars (played by Doyle Bramhall II) keyboards by Simon Climie, and assorted other instruments.<\/p>\n Clapton combine well-known songs (\u201cSilent Night,\u201d \u201cWhite Christmas,\u201d and \u201cAway In A Manger\u201d) with lesser known\u00a0material such as \u201cLonesome Christmas,\u201d \u201cSentimental Moments,\u201d and \u201cChristmas Tears.\u201d The original \u201cFor Love On Christmas Day\u201d is a fine addition to the holiday lexicon.<\/p>\n His\u00a0fiery guitar playing of the past may not be so prevalent, but there are times when he steps forward. The sound he creates is still distinctive and immediately recognizable.<\/p>\n The only oddity is a techno version of \u201cJingle Bells,\u201d which is far from the original intent of the song. Different from most of what Clapton has produced during his career; it is \u2013 for better or worse \u2013 a reimaging of\u00a0the holiday classic. It has producer Climie\u2019s imprint all over it and is dedicated to deceased Swedish artist Avicii.<\/p>\n Eric Clapton may seem like an unusual artist to produce a Christmas album, yet it feels authentic because of his blues imprint.
