Mitch Ryder is best known for his series of rock\/blue-eyed soul hit singles during the mid to late 1960s. Songs such as \u201cDevil With The Blue Dress On,\u201d \u201cSock It To Me Baby,\u201d \u201cJenny Take A Ride,\u201d and \u201cToo Many Fish In The Sea\u201d helped define AM radio rock \u2018n\u2019 roll of the era.<\/p>\n
With his band The Detroit Wheels and as a solo artist, Ryder has continued to record and tour for the last 50 years. His newest release is titled Detroit Breakout.<\/em><\/p>\n Each of the 14 tracks features a guest artist. Lee Oskar, Cherie Currie, Joe Lewis Walker, Brian Auger, Sylvain Sylvain, and Linda Gail Lewis are some of the artists who lend a hand. The problem is that they are buried in the mix many times. The engineering problems continue as there is a sense of disconnect between the vocals and the instrumental backing. It feels as if the vocals were recorded separately and pasted over the instrumental tracks, and as a result, they don\u2019t quite mesh.<\/p>\n The good news is that Ryder\u2019s voice is still formidable. It can be over-the-top or fairly sedate and subtle depending on the song.<\/p>\n The song choice is eclectic. The Standells \u201cDirty Water\u201d fits his style, but the Monkees \u201c(I\u2019m Not Your) Steppin\u2019 Stone\u201d does not so much. The Capital\u2019s \u201cCool Jerk,\u201d Jim Croce\u2019s \u201cBad Bad Leroy Brown,\u201d Roy Orbison\u2019s \u201cDream Baby,\u201d and a surprisingly excellent cover of the folk song \u201cIf I Had A Hammer\u201d are hit-or-miss.<\/p>\n His covers of classic soul songs benefit from Ryder\u2019s understated vocals. \u201c(Sittin\u2019 On) The Dock Of The Bay\u201d with Arthur Adams on guitar, The Temptations \u201cJust My Imagination\u201d featuring Lee Oscar on harmonica, and Sam Cooke\u2019s Classic \u201cYou Send Me\u201d with Linda Gail Lewis present the soft and smooth side of Ryder\u2019s music.<\/p>\n Detroit Breakout <\/em>has its good and some not so good points, but at its foundation, Ryder\u2019s voice shines through.
