Yes, you read that right. This is a Dee Dee Ramone solo album from just before he split from the Ramones. Unfortunately, Dee Dee decided to make his version of a pseudo hip-hop record, using the moniker Dee Dee King. His idea of hip-hop was a lot of posing, gold chains, and talking about luxury. \u201cPsycho Therapy\u201d and \u201cBlitzkrieg Bop\u201d this ain\u2019t. Hearing the opening track \u201cMashed Potato Time,\u201d the cringe level gets cranked all the way to maximum level. It wouldn\u2019t have felt out of place in \u201cHairspray,\u201d but as for being the master of hip-hop, Dee Dee isn\u2019t anywhere close. The backup vocals on the track courtesy of Debbie Harry help save it from complete embarrassment, but god, Dee Dee\u2019s lyrics are total trash.<\/p>\n
Dee Dee knew he didn\u2019t really have any real flow when it came to being a rapper, so he basically just sings everything with a rudimentary drum machine backing him. Now on older Ramones tracks like \u201cWart Hog,\u201d \u201cLove Kills\u201d and \u201cEndless Vacation,\u201d his vocals are more than suited for each track, but hearing him try to croon on \u201cBaby Doll,\u201d you can\u2019t help but snicker and giggle. It\u2019s just so ridiculous, but it\u2019s not as terrible as I had suspected. It\u2019s more of a head scratcher as to why Dee Dee thought this was a good idea. It didn\u2019t really harm the band as Dee Dee quit a few months later to pursue whatever the hell he decided was better than dealing with Johnny Ramone.<\/p>\n
Ironically, the band ended up covering \u201cThe Crusher\u201d on their last record, Adios Amigos<\/i>; it\u2019s the closest thing to a regular Ramones track. Luckily it\u2019s a better song than whatever \u201cCommotion In The Ocean\u201d is. Whatever you\u2019ve heard, this isn\u2019t strictly hip-hop, but it\u2019s not very good either. It\u2019s not even the worst thing I\u2019ve ever heard; if anything, it\u2019s just embarrassingly sad and weird. If Dee Dee had gotten a bunch of friends to do songs he\u2019d written, it would have been better than all this weirdness.
