The New Moon Jelly Roll Rockers is a long lost and brief super group consisting of Charlie Musselwhite, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Jimbo Mathis, the late Jim Dickinson, Luther Dickinson, and Cody Dickinson.\u00a0 During 2007, they gathered at Jim Dickinson\u2019s ranch. They just sat in a circle and played and sang into microphones set in front of each person. Two albums worth of material was recorded at these casual sessions. The tapes were lost for over a decade, mainly due to Jim Dickinson\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n
I reviewed the New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers\u2019 first volume last year. Now, Volume 2 <\/i>has been released. Many times, a second volume of music from the same sessions is inferior because the better material has already been released. \u00a0This is a rare occasion when the second volume is better than the first. <\/p>\n
First, the material fluctuates between classic blues and rock and roll, and even includes an old jazz piece. They all benefit from the simple approach of the band. Second, the sound is surprisingly good for the type of recoding session as each voice and instrument is distinct.<\/p>\n
Three rock songs are transformed in a blues direction. Charlie Musselwhite\u2019s \u201cBlack Water\u201d and \u201cBlues For Yesterday,\u201d plus Doug Sahm\u2019s \u201cShe\u2019s About A Mover\u201d highlight the album as the songs take on new structures far from their rock roots.<\/p>\n
Classic blues is also well represented here. Jimmy Reed\u2019s \u201cCan\u2019t Stand To See You Go,\u201d Junior Wells\u2019 \u201cMessin\u2019 With The Kid,\u201d and The Mississippi Sheiks\u2019 \u201cBlues Is A Mighty Bad Feeling\u201d may have a modern sheen, but at their foundation, they are straight from the Southern Delta.<\/p>\n
Charlie Mingus\u2019 \u201cOh Lord Don\u2019t Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me\u201d may be a little weird, but it is also a lot of fun.<\/p>\n
\u00a0The New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers has issued an album of very listenable blues.
