Taking a step back from the overwhelming, confusing, and sometimes uninteresting \u201cstory\u201d of 2018\u2019s Trench<\/i>, the Pilots has returned with a stripped-down sound and one of the most exciting pop records of the year. The album\u2019s first single \u201cShy Away\u201d is one of the best songs of the year and gets better with repeated listens. It\u2019s one of those songs that grabs you and keeps you interested.<\/p>\n
The album kicks off with \u201cGood Day,\u201d which sounds like Hall & Oates mixed with some \u201870s Billy Joel. It\u2019s not what you would be expecting from the Pilots, but it works so damn well. This is a true maturation in sound. The lo-fi New Wave of \u201cChoker\u201d really shows how far the band have come from the everything and the kitchen sink of \u201cCar Radio.\u201d The only time the album slips into subpar is with \u201cThe Outside\u201d and \u201cSaturday,\u201d two songs that lean towards a dance sound that feels unbecoming for a band like this.<\/p>\n
Other songs like \u201cNever Take It\u201d are the ways that alternative rock is heading towards, which is perfectly fine as long as it still sounds like there\u2019s an edge behind it. In this case, the band still has just enough of an edge behind them to make it rise above the mediocrity that\u2019s all over the genre from the likes of AJR and others.<\/p>\n
The embrace of pop on this record really shows off the band\u2019s strengths, both lyrically and musically. It doesn\u2019t even feel as dark and foreboding as most songs on Trench<\/i>, which is such a relief. \u201cBounce Man\u201d and \u201cNo Chances\u201d are two of the best tracks here and really seem to bring the band\u2019s sound full circle. <\/p>\n
