Having seen the Blaggards live, I can safely say this recording manages to capture their weird, wonderful, and manic action.<\/p>\n
Version of \u201cWhiskey In The Jar\u201d that\u2019s half Western swing? Check.<\/p>\n
\u201cWaxie\u2019s Dargle\u201d sung at about 180 beats per minute? Check.<\/p>\n
\u201cDrunken Sailor\u201d with all the dirty parts left in? Check.<\/p>\n
Damn, this is a fine band. And unlike many live recordings, Live In Texas<\/i> catches their onstage and song choice persona quite well. This is, after all, the band who mashed up \u201cFolsom Prison Blues\u201d and \u201cThe Fields Of Atherny\u201d into the ultimate jail-sucks medley, \u201cPrison Love Songs.\u201d Live<\/i> is a giant detonation of Celtic badassry, heavy drinking (or at least singing about it), and Texas attitude.<\/p>\n
\u201cLeaving Of Liverpool\u201d is one of my favorite versions of this standard. \u201cBotany Bay\u201d is a rollicking, thumping, blazing dance tune that leaves me wondering why the fiddle didn\u2019t catch fire. \u201cBig Strong Man\u201d \u2013 well, just listen to it. I can\u2019t stop giggling. They manage to namecheck Austin\u2019s (in)famous music venue The Continental Club while a fiddle saws through the tune we know better as \u201cYakety Sax.\u201d<\/p>\n
There is exactly one weak spot on this CD. \u201cSpancil Hill\u201d drags a bit; it\u2019s like the band treated it as an intermission. Unfortunately, the rest of Live<\/i> makes you expect manic energy, and this is flat by comparison.<\/p>\n
Do you like the Dropkicks Murphys? Flogging Molly? Great Big Sea? Then you should amble on down and check out the Blaggards\u2019 Live In Texas<\/i>.
