After an album that was rife with sexual braggadocio, one might find it odd to read a claim that Lovehunter<\/i>, Whitesnake\u2019s third album, backed off of the lasciviousness\u2014especially when the front cover featured a naked woman astride a giant serpent. (In the words of the late George Carlin, you didn\u2019t need to be Fellini to figure that<\/i> one out.)<\/p>\n
Yet on this disc, David Coverdale and crew did indeed back away (mostly) from the overtly sexual songs, and turned their focus back to the blues-based rock that could be heard on their debut effort Snakebite<\/i>. It\u2019s a definite improvement, but still not on par with their best work.<\/p>\n
Oh, make no mistake, there\u2019s still material here that delves into relations with the fairer sex\u2014but they\u2019re nowhere near as blunt as they were on Trouble<\/i>. \u201cMedicine Man\u201d and the title track all deal with the pursuit of women, but the scenarios are far tamer\u2026 and while some might scream \u201chypocrite\u201d as I\u2019ve been a fan of bands like AC\/DC since I was 14 years old, the difference is that Whitesnake always sounded like they were serious, while AC\/DC was akin to locker room bragging.<\/p>\n
Anyhow\u2026 where Lovehunter<\/i> succeeds eventually is in the blues-based rock they became known for in the beginning of their career. Tracks such as \u201cWalking In The Shadow Of The Blues,\u201d \u201cYou \u2018N\u2019 Me\u201d and \u201cMean Business\u201d all illustrate the talent the band had in that regard.<\/p>\n
Yet they could also tackle rock head-on, as evidenced by the track \u201cOutlaw,\u201d sung by guitarist Bernie Marsden. If anything, this song proved that Whitesnake were no mere one-trick pony in terms of vocal talent\u2014and, with no disrespect meant to Coverdale, it\u2019s kind of a pity they didn\u2019t pursue such efforts further\u2014an argument that could be made as well for the keyboard and vocal closer \u201cWe Wish You Well.\u201d<\/p>\n
If every track on Lovehunter<\/i> had that kind of power, the disc would be unstoppable. But some efforts such as \u201cLong Way From Home,\u201d \u201cHelp Me Thro\u2019 The Day\u201d and \u201cRock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Women,\u201d while not bad efforts, don\u2019t pack nearly the same punch.<\/p>\n
