Who knew? Mick Jagger is 80 and Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood are close behind. When the Rolling Stones announced their first album of original material in two decades, I wasn\u2019t sure about the prospect of octogenarian rock. After listening to Hackney Diamonds<\/i>, it\u2019s clear that <\/i>all is well with the world of late life rock and roll.<\/p>\n
From the opening notes of \u201cAngry,\u201d you quickly realize that the Stones are on safe ground. It is guitar-based rock and roll that builds as it progresses. <\/p>\n
There are a number of guests who do not make the music better or worse. Elton John and Paul McCartney on \u201cBite My Head Off\u201d are more appreciated than necessary. \u201cSweet Sounds Of Love\u201d is a soulful gospel ballad where Lady Gaga gets the backing vocals just right.<\/p>\n
Drummer Charlie Watts has passed away, so \u201cLove By The Sword\u201d and \u201cMess It Up\u201d are possibly his last two performances on an official Stones release. Bill Wyman, who is 86 years old, contributes the bass on \u201cLive By The Sword,\u201d convening the four (at the time) surviving original members of the Stones on one track.<\/p>\n
\u201cDriving Me Too Hard,\u201d \u201cTell Me Straight\u201d (a Keith Richards ballad), and \u201cDreamy Skies\u201d are all excellent in their own right.<\/p>\n
Hackney Diamonds <\/i>may not match the standard set in the Exile On Main Street <\/i>era, <\/i>\u00a0but it is one of the better efforts of the second half of the Stones\u2019 long career. That the Rolling Stones had the resolve to produce an album of this excellence at their age is remarkable.
