The sophomore album from the Los Angeles power-pop outfit The Pretty Flowers, A Company Sleeve<\/i> was penned during a tough time at work for the front man Noah Green, and that negative energy was parlayed into an often \u201990s-influenced listen that\u2019s packed with melodies.<\/p>\n
The lo-fi sounds of \u201cYoung Gray Enemies\u201d bursts into the loud and crisp alt-rock of the first track, where Sean Johnson\u2019s animated drums make an impression. \u201cAnother Way To Lose\u201d then follows with Sam Tiger\u2019s lively bass lines complementing the energetic and garage-rock friendly delivery.<\/p>\n
Side A continues with the lush textures of \u201cHit Nothing,\u201d as well as the driving pace of the crunchy guitars that radiate in \u201cBaby Food.\u201d The final track on the first half, \u201cAgendaless,\u201d is among the best, and seems like it could be an updated version of The Replacements with much better production.<\/p>\n
The second half leads with the thumping and reflective tone of \u201cWildflowers,\u201d before the more rugged \u201cHoneylight,\u201d which brings to mind the almighty Superchunk thanks to Jake Gideon\u2019s meticulous guitar playing. Gideon, who produced the effort, did a great job of highlighting everyone\u2019s respective strengths. <\/p>\n
Landing closer to the end, \u201cSit Right With You\u201d spotlights Green\u2019s smooth voice alongside the early \u201990s college rock nods that recruit plenty of harmony. \u201cSoon Enough Blues\u201d then exits with a warm acoustic guitar fueled track that carries a hint of twang which builds into a soaring and dynamic finish of indie-rock ideas. <\/p>\n
