Orchid South<\/i>, the third album from the Memphis singer-songwriter Chris Milam, is made up of 11 songs crafted over three years of intense work, with all the tunes ultimately captured live from the tracking room floor in four days.<\/p>\n
The flowing and rich title track opens the listen with crisp drums, breezy guitars and well-timed horns that won\u2019t go unnoticed. \u201cAlmost Gone\u201d follows, recruiting powerful guitars and soaring vocals that touch on power-pop ideas while still being very much indebted to rock\u2019n\u2019roll, followed by the bare-versus-busy dynamics of \u201cCut Myself Shaving,\u201d which builds into an emotive climate.<\/p>\n
Further along, the scrappy and dance floor-ready \u201cAlways On My Mind\u201d is an infectious take on the Phantom Planet original, and the intimate delivery of \u201cBad Dream\u201d exits side A with a dreamy demeanor of beauty and introspection.<\/p>\n
The back half of the album doesn\u2019t disappoint, either, where \u201cCelebrity Now\u201d is a full of bright musicianship that showcases a meticulous guitar solo and punchy, driving bass and drums. The heartfelt \u201cLet Me Love You\u201d is a cozy duet that\u2019s touching and poetic, where Milam’s smooth voice is met with lovely female pipes.<\/p>\n
The final two tracks are among the best. \u201cUnderwater\u201d blurs itself in a haze of textured, mesmerizing song craft that\u2019s nearly meditative, and \u201cSong Of The Summer\u201d bookends the record with graceful piano and expressive singing that\u2019s eloquent and memorable.<\/p>\n
Somewhere between folk-rock, Americana, retro power-pop and good old-fashioned rock\u2019n\u2019roll, Milam has seen comparisons to Paul Simon, and shared the stage with Cory Branan, who he also may bring to mind.
