Chicago-based shoegaze outfit Airiel\u2019s website says about the band\u2019s music: \u201cIt\u2019s loud. It\u2019s pretty. You can dance to it.\u201d This is the principle that has guided the group\u2019s music all along, including this second full-length album. <\/p>\n
In a lot of ways, the band\u2019s music is exactly what you\u2019d expect based on their description. It has colossal guitars making lots of noise and creating shimmery effects, and has drums that are bursting with life. This is to say, the music is meant to follow a specific formula (and the band might even attest to this). However, what\u2019s absolutely genuine about Airiel\u2014and Molten Young Lovers<\/i> in particular\u2014is that they celebrate this music that they love with unbridled enthusiasm; and this enthusiasm is infectious.<\/p>\n
Take the absolute banger of a song, the opening track, \u201cThis Is Permanent.\u201d Yes, it is dancy and loud. But the energy that the group puts into performing this song is what ultimately wins the heart. <\/p>\n
Even the slower songs like \u201cMolten Young Lovers,\u201d \u201cYour Lips, My Mouth,\u201d and \u201cKeep You,\u201d where the focus is creating placid cinematic Slowdive-like soundscapes, the drumming pounds vigorously, true to the spirit of the band to make music that you can dance to.<\/p>\n
Airiel can really make noise that will please any shoegaze-head\u2019s ears. On \u201cThe Painkillers\u201d and \u201cRed Car,\u201d the guitars are gnarly and psychedelic, and suck the listener into a vortex of pure noise (and bliss) similar to the later tracks on Radiohead\u2019s Pablo Honey<\/i>, \u201cLurgee\u201d and \u201cBlow Out.\u201d On \u201cCloudburst\u201d and \u201cInside Out,\u201d the group mix wistful melodiousness with satisfyingly noisy guitars resulting in a kind of beauty that\u2019s both ethereal and discordant. <\/p>\n
Of their two albums and numerous EPs, Airiel haven\u2019t sounded better than they have on Molten Young Lovers<\/i>.
