George Harrison released his fourth studio album Living In The Material World<\/i> in 1973, and this 50th Anniversary Edition brings us the original with a new mix thanks to Paul Hicks, plus a bonus album of previously unreleased studio outtakes and demos. Also included are a 12-page book and poster.<\/p>\n
The original album opens with the warm acoustic strumming of \u201cGive Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth),\u201d where Harrison\u2019s gritty voice is met with fluid piano thanks to Klaus Voormann. \u201cSue Me, Sue You Blues\u201d follows, and is a brighter moment that welcomes Eastern influences, and \u201cDon\u2019t Let Me Wait Too Long\u201d has Harrison hitting some pretty high notes in a busy delivery of rich folk-rock ideas.<\/p>\n
Side B leads with \u201cThe Lord Loves The One (That Loves The Lord),\u201d where Jim Horn\u2019s well-timed horns and the crisp drums provide much diversity, though it\u2019s the darker spirit of \u201cTry Some Buy Some\u201d that makes the LP worth the investment thanks to the mesmerizing and distinct droning. The aptly titled \u201cThat Is All\u201d exits then with an emotive presence that\u2019s gorgeous and heartfelt.<\/p>\n
The extra LP is primarily the same songs in different versions. \u201cThe Light That Has Lighted The World (Take 13)\u201d offers a piano-led moment of insightful wordplay, and \u201cLiving In A Material World (Take 31)\u201d is a frisky tune of scrappy rock\u2019n\u2019roll that touches on Harrison\u2019s full-band work. \u201cMiss O’Dell,\u201d a track not on the original, arrives late, and is percussively strong, rhythmic and even uses harmonica alongside a playful vocal delivery from Harrison. <\/p>\n
Harrison plays all rhythm and lead guitar on the album, and Ringo Starr contributes as well.
