A Seattle trio consisting of Dylan Fuentes, Miles Hubbard and Mitch Midkiff, Weep Wave on this second album dances around all sorts of genres while still being anchored to the gritty rock their hometown is known for. The legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, L7, Mark Lanegan) mastered the effort, and it’s in line with some of his best work to date. <\/p>\n
The thumping drums of \u201cConscious Dust\u201d opens and are met with Fuentes\u2019 bellowing vocals and dense guitar for a driving version of garage rock. \u201cRebirth Mantra\u201d then emits plenty of melody and ruggedness, where a swirling post-punk appeal won\u2019t go unnoticed.<\/p>\n
Things take a drastic turn in the middle, where the buzzing electro-pop of \u201cSlow Collapse\u201d brings some cosmic, club-friendly sounds, while the dense and psyche-rock flavored \u201cThe Pattern\u201d lets Midkiff\u2019s bass acrobatics shine. \u201cMicro Details Of The Universe,\u201d the shortest tune, then uses talking and a bare, dreamy delivery that illustrates even more diversity.<\/p>\n
Residing near the end, the scrappy \u201cSurrender\u201d spotlights Hubbard\u2019s skilled drumming in a more punk rock-focused moment, and \u201cNever Wake Up,\u201d a late album highlight, leads with dream pop before bursting into hard hitting psyche-rock that pounds with intrigue. The final track, \u201cCredits To My Life,\u201d then soars with an anthemic quality of punchy and timeless rock.<\/p>\n
A fantastic record that\u2019s all over the place yet still very cohesive, all sorts of variations of rock live here, and the thick riffs, electronic bouts, strategic dissonance and curious atmospherics make each tune a bit different but equally memorable. <\/p>\n
