The moody and soft \u201cThis Time I\u2019m Gone For Good\u201d leads with Bland\u2019s smooth and powerful pipes alongside intricate electric guitar. \u201cUp And Down World\u201d follows, and uses playful bass and Ed Greene\u2019s agile drumming that suits the soulful pipes.<\/p>\n
Moving along, the heartfelt storytelling of \u201c(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don\u2019t Want To Be Right\u201d brings some grit into the sincere singing and rich musicianship, but it\u2019s Michael Omartian\u2019s lively keys that make the middle track, \u201cGoin\u2019 Down Slow\u201d, the best. Also the longest song, it recruits the cautious rhythm section, bluesy guitars, and lively horns which complement Bland\u2019s distinct voice.<\/p>\n
Landing closer to the end, Sid Sharp\u2019s string vision illuminates the sophisticated and raw \u201cHelp Me Through The Day,\u201d and \u201cFriday The 13th Child\u201d continues the mature songwriting via animated bass, light drumming and lush, breezy singing. \u201cI\u2019ve Got To Use My Imagination\u201d is the final track, and turns not-so-happy lyrics into a textured and melodic exit. <\/p>\n
Often considered one of the greatest in the area of blues, soul and R&B, Bland\u2019s authentic body of work sounds great 50-plus years later, and the contributions from Ben Benay, David Cohen, Larry Carlton, Mel Brown and Dean Parks on guitar can\u2019t go unmentioned.
