An instrumental quintet from Brooklyn, Thee Reps consists of Andie Tanning, Dave Ruder, Jeff Tobias, Mike McCurdy and Sam Morrision, who have been gigging around NYC since 2015. Together, they birth a very atypical version of indie-rock that\u2019s highly creative and has each member writing at least one track that will likely get you dancing. <\/p>\n
The spacey and atmospheric \u201cMr. Telephone Thrower\u201d starts the listen with McCurdy\u2019s thumping drums and Ruder\u2019s bright synth alongside Tanning\u2019s rich viola that makes for a very atypical post-punk meets chamber rock climate. \u201cEspadrilles\u201d then follows, and almost seems like carnival music thanks to its playful dynamics and hypnotic melody.<\/p>\n
Further along, \u201cRisque Du Choc\u201d is a calm moment populated by Tanning\u2019s graceful violin and Tobias\u2019 warm electric bass, while \u201c3AM\u201d focuses more on improvisation via the unpredictable drumming. \u201cExit A,\u201d the album highlight, then leads with precise grooves before Morrison\u2019s meticulous keys help steer the tune into calculated noise-rock territory.<\/p>\n
Landing closer to the end, the rhythmic and harmonic \u201cHeavy Guessing\u201d nearly finds a way to be soothing, and the scrappy \u201cShould You Be Dancing?\u201d exits with the frisky rhythm section and fluid keys that suit the swirling, sonic energy.<\/p>\n
This is the sophomore release from Thee Reps, and it\u2019s a more complicated effort, but no less appealing than their 2019 debut Minimal Surface<\/i>. Color and repetition are certainly a big part of their formula, as are \u201990s post-rock and math-rock nods, \u201970 Krautrock flavor and \u201960s minimalism, and it\u2019s all presented with much intrigue. <\/p>\n
