The multi-talented Brooklyn artist Dave Ruder doesn\u2019t actually play any instruments on this cassette. Due to the repercussions of Long Covid, he\u2019s unable to do so, but he farmed out each part to some hired help who just happened to be some top notch New York City\u2019s finest. <\/p>\n
The frisky drums from Robby Bowen lead \u201cJames Worthy,\u201d where the subject matter surrounds a basketball player, with a soulful yet humorous delivery. \u201cLoaf Cakes Are For Surfers\u201d then uses Emily Manzo\u2019s smooth keys and Ruder\u2019s repetitive spoken word, while \u201cRepenting Stranger\u201d incorporates accordion and plucked bass via the vivid storytelling.<\/p>\n
The first side exits with \u201cSpeaking In Similes\u201d and \u201cLike A Canyon.\u201d The former employs thick bass and playful electronics alongside clever wordplay, and the latter invites Miranda Agnew\u2019s well timed trumpet and Roberta Michel\u2019s dreamy flute into a cozy delivery.<\/p>\n
The back half opens with the short \u201cRed Footed Duck,\u201d a harmonic duet with Aliza Simons. \u201cSeltzer To A Bee\u201d follows with Ruder handling the beat-driven and stylish second half highlight.<\/p>\n
\u201cStrings Of The King\u201d arrives late and enlists Cory Braken\u2019s animated marimba and Jeff Tobias\u2019 strategic bass clarinet to some really funny lyrics, and \u201cDon\u2019t Touch Me\u201d exits with Gelsey Bell\u2019s expressive voice that suits Ruder\u2019s pipes for the not-too-subtle lyrics and softer mood.<\/p>\n
Ruder\u2019s resume is quite impressive. He\u2019s been involved with bands like Varispeed, thingNY, Thee Reps and Florida Lucid Dreaming. This venture under his own name is certainly atypical, and resides somewhere between avant-pop, chamber music and art-rock. Most importantly, though, it will keep you highly entertained from beginning to end in a way that leaves it unclear if Ruder\u2019s vision is one of utmost stupidity or indirect genius.
