The esteemed vocalist, pianist and composer Niia is back with her fifth album, where a return to her roots and first love, i.e. jazz, recruits electronic pop ideas alongside live musicianship for the 11 creative tracks.<\/p>\n
The rich and atmospheric \u201cFucking Happy\u201d leads with Niia\u2019s distinct and commanding voice that welcomes Vancil Cooper\u2019s crisp drums and the occasional quick blast of firm wordplay. \u201cRonny Cammareri\u201d then follows, using a mesmerizing bass line plus Nicole McCabe\u2019s radiant sax generating much elegance.<\/p>\n
Moving towards the middle, \u201cI Found The Restaurant\u201d is a soft moment of sublime intimacy thanks to Niia\u2019s expressive voice and careful instrumentation, while \u201cWith Feeling\u201d is a brief, cozy display of colorful and soulful sax prowess that makes an impression in under a minute.<\/p>\n
\u201cPianos And Great Danes,\u201d one of the busiest tunes, exits the first side and pairs a lively beat with pretty singing and flowing keys that suit the dance floor mood. \u201cAgain With Feeling\u201d then starts the backside with hypnotic keys from Benjamin Bock that align with Niia\u2019s diverse pipes.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaria Is Blue\u201d resides close to the end and is the best track. The melodies are mature, the setting cryptic and the singing is captivating, but \u201cThe Awful Truth\u201d is a close second thanks to the sing-alongs and frisky percussion that supports a stylish, modern appeal that\u2019s jazz-tinted. \u201cAngel Eyes\u201d exits, and allows for the lovely singing to be complemented by sophisticated piano. It\u2019s a song that\u2019s been covered many times, but never quite like this.<\/p>\n
Niia\u2019s classical training is put to good use here. It\u2019s her most personal album to date, where dreamy moments, straight ahead jazz and innovative electronica won\u2019t be hard to spot or appreciate.
