Here\u2019s a sentence you won\u2019t see too many places in 2026: I\u2019ve never heard A Perfect Circle.<\/p>\n
However, I always had the feeling I\u2019d like them, mostly based on the t-shirts worn by people who tell me they\u2019re a great band.<\/p>\n
This Definitive Sound Series One Step Edition brings Mer De Noms<\/i> back, 25 years after its original release, and mastered from 96kHz\/24bit files transferred from analog flat masters. I guess this means it sounds better than ever.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Hollow\u201d start the double LP with Bill Howerdel\u2019s dense, swirling guitar alongside Maynard James Keenan\u2019s tough but elegant vocals for the prog\/alt\/hard rock hybrid. \u201cMagdalena\u201d follows with Josh Freese\u2019s thumping drums complementing a bit of haunting quality that\u2019s shrouded in mystery.<\/p>\n
Side B brings us \u201cJudith,\u201d where a thick chugging enters harsher territory that\u2019s biting and progressive, while \u201c3 Libras\u201d welcomes Paz Lenchantin\u2019s sophisticated violin and Luciano Lenchantin\u2019s moody viola via a textured and poetic mood.<\/p>\n
Side C offers us the rugged and somewhat dreamy \u201cSleeping Beauty (Extended Intro),\u201d as Troy Van Leeuwen lends a hand on guitar and Keenan\u2019s voice does soar with beauty, but it\u2019s the contrast of intimacy versus grungy bouts that makes \u201cThomas\u201d the highlight on the back half. The aptly titled \u201cOver\u201d finishes the record with Keenan playing a kalimba and Howerdel\u2019s mature piano in a sparse and soothing exit to an otherwise pretty loud affair.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s pretty easy to see why this debut entered the Billboard 200 at No. 4 and was certified platinum the same year. Keenan, Howerdel and company take from alt-rock, artistic ideas, prog-rock and even metal for a very unique and ambient presence.<\/p>\n
