This is the first album from the Norway native, drummer, rapper and vocalist \u00d8yunn (real name Siv \u00d8yunn Kjenstad), who brings beats, power and soaring vocals to these eight very distinct and unique tracks that were fleshed out over four years and are lyrically very forthright.<\/p>\n
The pop fueled \u201cNew Life\u201d begins with Jens Mikkel Madsen\u2019s animated bass lines that align with both singing and rapping from \u00d8yunn. The title track then follows with dreamy moments, soulful bouts and Kasper Staub\u2019s call and response vocals that complement \u00d8yunn\u2019s bright delivery.<\/p>\n
Closer to the middle, the rapid fire drumming of \u201cHope That You\u2019ll Sing Again\u201d welcomes playful beats, while \u201cFeed The Good\u201d makes great use of Staub\u2019s colorful synth that suits the vocal acrobatics. \u201cCycle\u201d finishes the first side with an upbeat and pretty display of mature and charming songwriting.<\/p>\n
The back side is just three songs but no less memorable. The mesmerizing \u201cConfusion\u201d uses talking and harmonic singing that\u2019s layered in a hazy climate. \u201cI Wanna Talk To You\u201d then manipulates the vocals in a more intimate environment that\u2019s stylish and very much in tune with today\u2019s version of electro-pop. \u201cConversations in The Night (We’re Ok)\u201d exits, and employs motivational quotes from Madsen that surround the rich instrumentation, expressive singing and swirling dynamics.<\/p>\n
\u00d8yunn \u00a0is perhaps best known as the touring drummer for the Copenhagen sensations Efterklang, as well as a player in Bugge Wesseltoft and Nils Frahm & Guldimund. This debut is soaked in grooves, self-reflection, and no lack of melodies, and has zero problem holding our attention from beginning to end.
