Delaware, Ohio cow-punk outfit Ugly Stick first released this punk-meets-roots-rock record way back in 1993. This remastered reissue puts the seminal album on vinyl for the first time (double LP, actually) and even tosses in some bonus live and studio tracks for the last six tunes.<\/p>\n
The scrappy drumming and radiant guitar tone of \u201cSerpent Mound\u201d opens the album with plenty of buzzing. \u201cMove\u201d then follows with a fuzzy alt-rock spirit that\u2019s raw, while \u201cCrib Death Reel\u201d trims the pace back with playful twang spirit.<\/p>\n
\u201cPig Pen\u201d finishes Side 1 with a flowing instrumental before the bristling and post-punk tinted \u201cBoss,\u201d which makes great use of Ed Mann\u2019s bass acrobatics. \u201cDrive-In Shut Down\u201d is another highlight from this portion thanks to Al Huckabee\u2019s swirling guitar aligning with the lively rhythm section, and then the band allow David Holm’s keys to guide the more subdued \u201cMann Child.\u201d<\/p>\n
Towards the end of the original album, \u201cJust Say Know\u201d offers a stylish and rhythmic setting, but it\u2019s the more dense delivery of \u201cGloriana\u201d that really benefits from Jeff Clowdus\u2019 sturdy drumming alongside the bristling guitars.<\/p>\n
The bonus material includes the rowdy spirit of \u201cKrazy Kar\u201d that can parallel late period The Replacements, as well as the busy, college rock grit of \u201cEl Beso Del Rey.\u201d \u201cHank\u201d exits the record; it\u2019s a soft, heartfelt moment of grace and rugged beauty.<\/p>\n
Ugly Stick broke up not long after this album was released, but regrouped in the 2000s for another record.
