This third album from The Black Crowes is just over 30 years old now, and to celebrate, the Robinson brothers had it remastered from the original one-quarter inch production master tape, slapped three B-sides on it and put it on two slabs on vinyl.<\/p>\n
\u201cGone\u201d leads the 1994 release with dense guitars and playful drumming, before Chris Robinson\u2019s soaring, unmistakable voice enters the Southern hard-rock climate. \u201cA Conspiracy\u201d follows with some funk and classic rock spirited ideas, and \u201cHigh Head Blues\u201d shifts into calmer blues territory thanks to Eddie Harsch\u2019s well timed keys.<\/p>\n
Moving further into the original album, \u201cNonfiction\u201d recruits warm acoustic guitar and a poetic quality that\u2019s more intimate, but it\u2019s the gritty yet tuneful boogie rock of \u201cShe Gave Good Sunflower\u201d that showcases Rich Robinson\u2019s fierce guitar that\u2019s worth the price of admission.<\/p>\n
Deeper still, the powerful and lush \u201cBallad In Urgency\u201d flirts with jam band nods, and \u201cWiser Time\u201d brings some haze and coziness via Johnny Colt\u2019s bass and Marc Ford\u2019s skilled guitar. \u201cDescending\u201d exits the original with much focus on piano that suits the soulful singing and building rhythm section.<\/p>\n
The bonus material includes a lively and groove-filled cover of Taj Mahal\u2019s \u201cChevrolet\u201d and the 2025 mixes of \u201cSong Of The Flesh\u201d and \u201cSunday Night Buttermilk Waltz.\u201d The former is a pretty thick and meticulous rocker, and the latter is more acoustic focused.<\/p>\n
Though I had listened to the first two albums from The Black Crowes when they came out, this one didn\u2019t make it to my turntable. It might have been the cover art.
