This is the debut LP from Northern California’s Ratinoff, who, like most artists recently, found himself with plenty of time to create music since touring had come to a halt during the pandemic. His sound is one that’s heavily influenced by the ’80s and the legends that inspired him, as the 10 tracks present sure do makes us nostalgic for early days of post-punk, New Wave, college-rock, etc.
Ratinoff starts the listen with the swirling melodies of “Another Day”, where crisp drumming and intricate guitar give the opener a feeling similar to The Cure, and “Light Me Up” follows with a loud and thumping arena rocker that’s quite anthemic.
Deeper on side A, strings and piano enter the orchestral and emotive ballad “Better”, while “Take Me Away” offers a fluid and instantly memorable New Wave rocker that certainly could have soundtracked a Brat Pack movie.
The back half of the listen leads with the cautious singing and post-punk fueled “Honey”, which might be the best tune here. “I Just Wanna Rock” then lives up to its name with a louder approach that includes bright synth and a sturdy alt-rock angle.
Closing out the record is the dreamy and soothing “Destiny Waits”, and the soulful backing vocals and upbeat spirit of the nostalgic “Bye”, which benefits from bouncy bass lines amid the glorious exit.
