The longest running Celtic band in America, Minneapolis’ Boiled In Lead, returns with a 12th album, and it’s got plenty of global flavor circling their punk rock ways.
The cautious title track starts the record with Todd Menton’s expressive voice alongside Morris Engel’s crisp drumming for the detailed storytelling and Haley Olson’s animated violin. “Bucimis” then follows and will get you on the dance floor immediately thanks to the quick melodies and rhythmic mood.
Moving along, “Slip Jigs” allows for Drew Miller’s intricate bass to shine amid the lively strings, while “(I’ll Sing You) ’Sail Away, Ladies” invites singing along to the bouncy folk climate. “Haley’s Reels” is where Olson’s violin really shines, and the charming percussion isn’t anything to spit at either, but it’s the glowing mandolin from Menton that makes “Je T’aime, Helena” the standout on the first half.
The back half leads with the sublime beauty of “Winifer Odd,” that’s soft and poetic, and the rich textures of “Bold Lovell” showcases the dynamic and thoughtful interplay between the quartet.
Inching closer to the end, “Adje Jano” is sung in Serbian and full of cultured songwriting, and the fascinating atmosphere of “Fast Reels” is dripping in Irish flavor you can’t not adore. “Love, Farewell” exits and indeed carries a heartfelt demeanor thanks to Menton’s authentic voice.
Pioneers in the area of Minnesota punk rock, in their 40+ years Boiled In Lead have touched on Irish, Serbian, Bulgarian, Klezmer and American roots ideas via their Celtic, folk, roots and world music vision. A unique band who would fit on a bill with The Pogues just as they would Husker Du, if you’re not already a fan, you will be after spending time with this excellent LP.
