Women rock.

This is widely known and has been from roughly the time Janis Joplin first picked up a microphone (if not before). And we’ve certainly covered plenty of female artists over the past ten years on an individual basis, but with so much good music to choose from it seemed only natural to dedicate a full retrospective to the female factor of the rock and roll equation.

Thus was born the theme of this September’s retrospective — Women Who Rock.

Obviously, we’ll hit the highlights — Janis, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane, Patti Smith, Joan Jett and Pat Benatar. We’ll touch on post-punk with Deborah Harry and Blondie, not to mention Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders. We’ll look at Carole King, an early songwriter who proved influential in both that regard and as a solo performer, and we’ll mention Heart as well.

Finally, women of the alternative rock movement will get their due, from Liz Phair and Alanis Morrisette to Melissa Etheridge and Ani DiFranco, who isn’t a rocker but possesses the spirit. Sheryl Crow and Sleater-Kinney will make the list too, as well as a couple other surprises, all proof that gender means nothing to an electric guitar.

This retrospective begins Wednesday, September 5 and will continue all the way through Friday, September 28.  Join us every weekday for a new listen to Women Who Rock.

Founded in January 1997, the Daily Vault has featured over 4,900 reviews of over 2,400 artists covering almost the entire musical spectrum, written by a volunteer review staff from around the world. Previous Artist Of The Month retrospectives have spotlighted the work of artists from Tori Amos to Frank Zappa, including the Beatles, Garth Brooks, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Pearl Jam and many others. Themed retrospectives have included punk, hip-hop, arena rock, dynamic debuts and classic jazz.
