Southern California’s The Bolts is sure doing things right. In a relatively short life span, the band has already secured time on television shows like Necessary Roughness as well as licensing spots in NASCAR, The World Series, and with Delta Airlines. An early demo that was giving a boost by famed radio station KROQ at the beginning of their career got them headed in the right direction. Since then, the constant gigging, a residency at The Roxy and Disneyland, and their consistently penning memorable pop rock songs have turned the band into a word of mouth sensation. Though the five piece is gearing up for their first full length in early 2013, they’ve self-released this quick precursor EP of four tracks that will also end up on the LP.

The debut EP leads off with “Walk Away,” a tune that immediately brings a classic rock sound to mind but deftly moves into modern rock territory. If they still played music, this track seems ideal for MTV- energetic, upbeat and addictive. The second track is my personal favorite, a charming number with alternative rock leanings and nicely injected keys that reminds me of Weezer with a gym membership.  From there, the self-described influences of The Killers and Franz Ferdinand shine through; “This Can’t Be Real” certainly gives nods to these luminaries, though The Bolts tweaks things with their own formula. The disc ends with “We May Fall,” which shifts gears a couple times in form and tempo and often has remnants of ’80s pieces included.

Like any decent EP, Fall leaves you wanting more. The four part vocal harmonies and clever blend of pop rock, alt rock, and modern rock leave one to believe that if these guys aren’t being touted as ‘The Next Big Thing’ they very well should be. Expect big things here very soon.
