With their first full-length motion picture in theatres, The Lonely Island has returned with the soundtrack to the film doubling as their fourth album. All of the tracks are performed in the guise of Conner4Real and the Style Boyz, the main characters of the film. But without the benefit of seeing the performances in the film, the music really suffers and this record is ultimately one of the most disappointing of the year.
“I’m So Humble,” another collaboration with Adam Levine, is a fun track, while “Finest Girl” is the best song to be found here, featuring lyrics about how his girl wants him to bang her harder than the U.S. killed Bin Laden! The latter track is a blast, but others like “Equal Rights” and “Turn Up the Beef” just fall flat without the visuals to back them up.
Then there are others – like “Things in My Jeep” featuring Linkin Park and “Ashley Wednesday” featuring Seal – that are duds even in the film. Needless to say, this is one of the unfunniest records I’ve heard in a good long while, and I’ve listened to Adam Sandler and Larry The Cable Guy records!
There are also tracks featuring actor Chris Redd playing Hunter The Hungry that just fall on their faces, like “2 Banditos,” which just isn’t funny at all. That seems to be the problem with most of the record. “Karate Guy” and “Sick Glenda” are just painfully stupid and ‘songs’ like this just out and out SUCK.
Now don’t get me wrong, I do like The Lonely Island. I thought the movie was hysterical and who doesn’t like “YOLO” or “I Just Had Sex?” Those songs are funny and you don’t need the visuals in order to enjoy them, but with this soundtrack, the material just isn’t up to par and ultimately all you wind up with is one unfunny album. But as of this writing, the soundtrack has crashed and burned on the charts anyway, so who gives a damn, right?
